Furaffinity Update Hits the Fans

If you noticed today, FurAffinity was in read-only mode for a good 3-4 hours while the servers were updated. Well, now that mostly everything is up and running, the new layout is ready for your viewing pleasure. If things don’t seem to be showing up correctly, hit ctrl+F5 to force a hard refresh of the site’s cache.

First impressions:

  • The layout is much more narrow-browser friendly for things like mobile phones and console browsers, or if you just want to keep the window narrow while you do other stuff.
  • All control buttons are available under the header rather than to the far left, which makes them easier to find and navigate.
  • Ads are stretched along the top of the page, rather than scrunched along the left column.

A lot of fans really hate the new layout either on principle of hating anything new, or with some legitimate reason, but Dragoneer says things are only going to get stranger, teasing an eventual layout much more like Deviantart and closer in purpose to a social networking site, which I suppose FA/DA technically are.

I’d have to say I don’t really use FA much (only to Watch artists without DA pages), but I rather like the new layout compared to the old.

I’m more glad with this version, however, that I have a ad-blocker installed because the ads seem more obvious than before when I turned it off to check.

Rarely being at home, or even in a position to use FA or dA where I am, I’m not bothered about the changes. Though I do suppose it’s a welcome change of scenery to keep things interesting, to a degree.

I find it rather ironic, Dragoniade, that you have a go at FA for taking a few extra hours for a server move, when your own website was down for, oh…how many months?

I’d say it’s a case of a pot calling a kettle black, but if FA is a kettle, your site would be lucky to be described as a spoon.

Honestly, I like the update. I haven’t really seen anything wrong with it so far. The overall interface seems much simpler, and I can find my way around more easily, as it is much more similar to plenty of other websites out there, like ArtSpots (I think that’s what it’s called) or dA by this point. It just seems overall much easier to navigate through things, not to mention the unintentional search problem that happened on my iPod for so long doesn’t happen as often.

    So I like it. XP

FurAffinity occupies a special place in the furry community: it’s the #1 site in terms of traffic. Having the most users doesn’t equal the best product – look at how long the Commissions feature has been down, how long it took to implement search, the downtime, stolen passwords, etc. I’ve wondered whether (and when) another art site will surpass FA. After all, today’s Facebook is tomorrow’s Friendster.

This is a good step to keep people on FA – but new user registration is still disabled, and has been since February. In the meantime, I’d love to see how fast InkBunny and SoFurry are growing, and whether this will slow them down.

If FurAffinity walked on water, furries would criticise it for not being able to swim.

Am I supposed to be bothered by the fact that it’s a fapping site? Fapping material is why I go there; certainly not to make friends.
