The Emperor’s New Groove
Starring: David Spade, John Goodman, Eartha Kitt, Patrick Warbuton, John Fiedler (Yes, that John Fiedler)
Premise: A selfish, egotistical emperor plans to build a waterpark in honor of himself, and he only has to knock down and relocate an entire peaceful village. Meanwhile, his recently laid off evil genius advisor plans to kill him so she can take over the throne. Did I mention that she and her right hand man are completely incompetent? Said Emperor is turned into a llama by so called poison in a scheme gone awry, and he must rely on the help of one of the villagers who’s home he planned on destroying.
My Review: 8/10
Finally, David Spade actually made a wise career choice. This movie feels like a G Rated version of Family Guy due to its use of frequent (and often unnecessary) cutaway gags and seemingly random references. This is the type of thing that would make or break most films, but it’s that flair that gives this movie its brilliance. (That and the ensemble cast). This might annoy some people, but I found it was absolutely hilarious.
The transformations in the movie are numerous, but only the main one is staged in a sequence. The rest are sort of ‘Poof’ Transformations. But the fact that TF plays a central role is surely inviting to most furry fans.
One of the few things that I disliked about this film was that, as tends to happen, the popularity and genius of it spawned a lackluster sequel which really wasn’t that great, and a Television series that had a good strong run, but to my knowledge, only Patrick Warbuton and Eartha Kitt returned, probably because their unique voices are extremely difficult to match.
WRONG LEVER!
